Sport – the tape with extra-strong adhesion, ideal for sport
Matched to the demands of therapeutic use, PINOTAPE Sport stands up to every athletic challenge. It combines an innovative, water-repellent, lightweight rayon fabric with the strongest PINOTAPE adhesive. Elite athletes rely on it, and it is just as convincing in everyday life as a complementary therapy.
Classic – the cotton tape, a high-quality all-rounder
A high-quality, skin-friendly tape for therapy, sport, work and leisure. Breathable cotton combined with a hypoallergenic acrylic adhesive leaves nothing to be desired and offers very good skin tolerance.
Good to know: PINOTAPE Therapy is now PINOTAPE Classic – same proven quality.
Sensitive – the gentle tape, light and comfortable like a second skin
Made especially for very sensitive skin. Its extra-mild acrylic adhesive makes it particularly skin-friendly, breathable and comfortable to wear, while keeping full freedom of movement in sport, everyday life and therapy. It lets air and moisture through and comes off easily and painlessly after use.
Correction – the tape for corrective taping, ideal for extra stability
With 50% less elasticity, PINOTAPE Correction offers the best combination of stability and flexibility. It supports joints especially well during high-load activity and gives extra security without restricting functional mobility – ideal for anyone who wants stability but still values freedom of movement.
Kinesiology tape: the idea behind elastic taping
Professional kinesiology taping techniques have long been part of physiotherapy and of both elite and recreational sport. They allow controlled, moderate movement, which can have a positive effect on the healing of certain injuries.
The idea goes back to Japanese chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase, who developed the first kinesiology tape, called Kinesio Tape, around 40 years ago for his Kinesio Taping method. His starting point was the insight that for certain sports injuries, joints should not be immobilised – as with rigid sports tape – but the musculoskeletal system should deliberately be kept mobile. Since then the method has been continually developed, drawing on physiotherapy, sports medicine and orthopaedic knowledge. Its growing use in elite sport is why taping has become so successful worldwide.
The PINO advantage
Since 2006 PINO has offered its own elastic tape, PINOTAPE, for professional users. The range includes high-quality, dermatologically tested, skin-friendly tapes in different materials for each area of use. Unlike the original tape, PINO now also offers tapes made from other base materials, adapted to the demands of each application:
- Sport (rayon) – strong adhesive and quick-drying rayon for sporting activity
- Classic (cotton) – classic cotton tape for therapeutic use
- Sensitive (super sensitive) – extra-mild adhesive and undyed, for allergy sufferers and sensitive skin
- Fascia (myofascial) – special drop-shaped cut-outs for fascia therapy
- Hemp – undyed cotton-hemp fabric
Our products are medical devices and meet strict criteria. They are dermatologically and allergy tested. Every PINOTAPE offers:
- Very good skin tolerance, dermatologically tested
- Mild polyacrylate adhesive
- Air- and moisture-permeable, breathable
- Maximum functional range of motion, so free, recovery-focused training is possible
- Use in therapy, sport, work and leisure
- Long wear time
How does the tape work?
Tapes have become indispensable in physiotherapy, orthopaedics and sports medicine for rehabilitation and prevention. They are considered a gentle form of pain therapy and are used together with other physiotherapy treatments. Various studies suggest that controlled, moderate movement can positively influence the healing of certain injuries. The tapes are designed not to restrict range of motion and to stimulate the muscles with a kind of continuous massage, helping to relieve complaints more effectively.*
Current discussion of how the tape works covers possible positive effects on:*
- Muscles – tone regulation, improved function
- Joints – functional support
- The body's own pain-relief system – pain reduction through activation
- Fascia – e.g. improved fluid transport, reduced inflammatory response
This leads to many uses, such as neck pain, muscle injuries and complaints, shoulder problems, poor posture and postural weakness, fascial complaints, joint complaints, tendon sheath inflammation, knee pain, lymphoedema and neuropathies. There is no evidence that tape works against wrinkles, period pain or belly fat.
When is the tape used?
Kinesiology tape is an elastic tape that stabilises muscles, ligaments and joints after injury or inflammation without restricting movement – full range of motion! It is intended to activate and support the body's own healing.* Typical indications are:
- Pain
- Overuse disorders
- Inflammation
- Instability
of muscles, joints and ligaments. That is why elastic tape is often used in sport for:
- Golfer's and tennis elbow
- Runner's and jumper's knee
- Shoulder instability
- Inversion and supination (ankle) injuries
Some studies also suggest that increased muscle activity may reduce the risk of injury and improve performance. In therapy, tape is also used alongside the treatment of:
- Poor posture
- Lymphoedema
- Neuropathies
- Tendon complaints*
What should I keep in mind when applying it?
- Shave very hairy areas of skin.
- Skin and hands should be clean, dry and free of oil.
- Pre-position the strips before applying them.
- Round off the corners for better adhesion.
- Movement and friction activate the heat-sensitive adhesive.
How long can I wear the tape? PINOTAPE is designed to be worn for up to one week.
Where can I find the right technique?
The PINO Kinesiology Taping handbook offers a wide selection of application techniques, clearly explained with detailed descriptions and pictures – muscle, correction, space, fascia, ligament, lymph, nerve and scar techniques. You can also follow the PINOFIT channel on YouTube for regular new tutorials, or book a hands-on PINOTAPE course with our education team.
Which colour should I choose?
Tape now comes in many colours and patterns. Based on colour theory, the classic colours are often associated with certain effects:
- Blue: cooling and calming – used for bruises, swelling and inflammation
- Red: warming and stimulating – used for overuse or to activate muscles
- Beige: neutral – for applications that should be discreet, e.g. on the face
- Green: natural and balancing – used for restlessness or to target organs
- Black: bold and strong – often used in sport
There is no reliable study supporting these properties. The effect of a tape application depends on the technique, not the colour – so simply choose the colour you like!
What are the differences between tapes?
There are now many brands – so which should you buy? All kinesiology tapes share the elasticity needed for the techniques and a wave-pattern adhesive, and the base material is usually cotton. The clear differences are in quality and in base material: some brands now successfully use rayon (viscose), a material PINO has worked with for a very long time. PINO also offers widths from narrow to XXL, and extra-small Cross Tapes if you are looking for tape for the face.
Kinesiology tape vs. sports tape or Leukotape
Compared directly, conventional sports tapes are not elastic but rigid. They are used, for example, to restrict the movement of the wrist during competition. Because the stretch properties are so different, the two have different areas of use and application techniques.
Can there be side effects – is it dangerous?
Known side effects are allergies and skin irritation, and both are rare. Our recommendation for allergy sufferers is the Sensitive version with its extra-mild adhesive. Tape applied too tightly can irritate the skin, so remove it immediately if the skin underneath itches. There is no age limit, but children should only use tape under adult supervision.
Frequently asked questions
What makes PINOTAPE special?
PINO has made PINOTAPE for professional users since 2006. It is a registered medical device, dermatologically and allergy tested, and developed specifically for physiotherapy applications. Every roll combines high skin tolerance with reliable adhesion, a breathable weave, full freedom of movement and a wear time of up to one week.
Which kinesiology tape is right for me?
- Sport – water-repellent rayon with the strongest adhesive, for athletes and demanding activity.
- Classic – breathable cotton, the all-rounder for therapy, sport and daily life.
- Sensitive – extra-mild adhesive for delicate or allergy-prone skin.
- Correction – about 50% less stretch for added joint stability.
For large areas or high tape use, choose PINOTAPE Lymph / extra-wide tape or 31 m clinic rolls.
What is the difference between cotton and rayon?
Cotton (Classic) is a natural, breathable fibre with the familiar feel many patients prefer. Rayon (Sport, Correction) is lighter, dries faster and repels water, so it holds up better to sweat, showers and intense training.
Is PINOTAPE suitable for allergy sufferers?
Yes. All PINOTAPE products are dermatologically and allergy tested and use a mild polyacrylate adhesive, so reactions are rare. For allergy-prone or very sensitive skin we recommend PINOTAPE Sensitive. Remove the tape straight away if the skin underneath itches.
When is kinesiology tape used?
For pain, overuse, inflammation and instability of muscles, joints and ligaments – in sport for tennis or golfer's elbow, runner's and jumper's knee, shoulder instability and ankle sprains, and in therapy also for posture problems, lymphoedema, neuropathies and tendon complaints.*
What do I need to do so the tape holds as well as possible?
- Shave very hairy areas.
- Make sure skin and hands are clean, dry and free of oil or lotion.
- Pre-position the strip before applying it.
- Round off the corners so the edges don't lift.
- Rub the tape after applying – friction and warmth activate the heat-sensitive adhesive.
How is PINOTAPE different from classic sports tape?
Classic sports tape is rigid and restricts movement, for example to immobilise a wrist during competition. PINOTAPE is elastic and allows full range of motion, so the two are used for different purposes and with different techniques.
*The assumed effects are based on possible trends in studies, many individual case reports and clinical experience. They are not considered evidence-based, and the mechanism of action is so far purely hypothetical.
